In 2003, Michael Richards and Jack Sheets started Random Movement in Winter Haven, Florida. Richards, also known as Mike Richards, is an American drum-and-bass DJ and producer; Sheets, who also used the name Mister Shifter, left the project in 2006. The act’s 2005 single Love Nights / Red came out on Innerground Records. Richards has described making music on his own terms as a priority, and said he prefers producing to DJing.
Innerground Records also released the album Lucky Guess and the EP Her Song EP. Richards has put out music through V Recordings, CIA, Integral and Fokuz, as well as Innerground. The EP Ruffled Feathers, made with MixMaster Doc, appeared on Fokuz Recordings. His sound has been described as soulful, smooth, deep and jazzy drum and bass. Those descriptions accompany a body of work that also includes the EP Suggestions EP.
Richards founded Flight Pattern Records and runs the imprint. The album Lost On Purpose appeared there, as did the EPs Patterns Vol. 1 and Patterns Vol. 2, made with Atlantic Connection. His collaborators include Marky, S.P.Y, Jaybee, Dave Owen, Kasper, T.R.A.C., Collette Warren and Ben Soundscape. Richards began putting out DJ mixes regularly through his own podcast in 2009, adding a regular outlet for his selections alongside his production work.
In 2019, Random Movement Remixed was released as a single on Driven AM Recordings, followed by the single Ethereal / Holding Me Closer - Remixes with Fearbace on Bay 6 Recordings. Fokuz Recordings issued the 2021 single It's Over (Random Movement Remix). The 2023 album The Remember Sessions LP came out on Flight Pattern Records with Anthony Kasper and Jaybee, while the single Melon Rind appeared on Galacy Records. Richards played The Attic BK in Brooklyn in July 2025 and The Terrace in March 2026.
