Rufige Kru

Formed in 1992, Rufige Kru is Goldie’s collaborative drum-and-bass project, initially involving producers Mark Rutherford and Linford Jones. Goldie has described it as a changing group of collaborators, with the line-up shifting over time while working towards a shared sound. The name began with an extra “f”, as “Ruffige”, before becoming Rufige. Goldie’s work under the name included singles, and he co-founded Metalheadz. The project has also involved Rob Playford and Submotive, among other producers; its history includes contributions from engineers as well as producers.

Early releases on Reinforced Records included the track “Krisp Biscuit” and the EPs Darkrider and Terminator, with Mark Rutherford and Linford Jones involved in the EPs. Goldie has said early Rufige Kru drew on hip-hop sampling and breaks associated with JayBee, The Meters and EPMD. Those releases belong to a period in which the music moved from hardcore towards jungle and drum and bass. Other early material included the single “Killa Muffin b/w Krisp Biscuit”. Metalheadz later became a home for Rufige Kru releases, including two albums made with producer Heist.

Malice in Wonderland, released in 2007 on Metalheadz, was Rufige Kru’s first album. Goldie invited Heist to undertake engineering work, and the pair went on to make the album together. They followed it with Memoirs of an Afterlife in 2009, also released on Metalheadz. The project’s releases have also been associated with Moving Shadow and Function Records. Its collaborators have included Technical Itch and Doc Scott, alongside the producers involved in its early work.

In 2025, Goldie and Submotive co-produced the album Alpha Omega. That year also brought the single Still The Same (feat. CASISDEAD) [Special Request Remix], with CASISDEAD, and the single Goldikus (feat. Cleveland Watkiss) [Phase Remix], involving Phase and Submotive. The single Virgil (Seba & Paradox Remix) followed with Seba, while Alpha Omega Remixes paired Goldie and Submotive. In 2026, Goldie and Submotive released the single Metal Giants.
