Sam Segan, who performs as Segan, began making music towards the end of college, after starting out on piano and drums. Playing drums in a band led to DJing, and Segan played clubs in Chicago while studying. Around 2018–2019, Segan gravitated towards drum and bass; Pendulum and The Prodigy were early influences on the dance-music sound. By the time of the 2022 interview about In Your Arms, Segan was based in Los Angeles and working as a drum-and-bass producer and DJ. Segan’s sound combines drum and bass with half-time and melodic elements, with UK breakbeat among its influences.
The 2021 singles included Don’t Play and Champion, the latter released on Space Yacht. That year, Segan also joined CUSTOME for Attack Order, a single on Worstville, and released a remix of Courtney Drummey and ESPER’s Fly through Bass Camp Music. In 2022, In Your Arms brought together drum-and-bass and dubstep elements. The single was a change in texture from the half-time and melodic qualities Segan has associated with the broader sound, and was the subject of an interview that year. Segan’s work has also included collaborations with Gusta and hayve.
In 2025, Segan released the EP GENERATIONAL, featuring the tracks Lost Ya Mind and GENERATIONAL. The year’s singles also included The Same and TEMPO. In 2026, Pump It appeared as a single, with DistroKid named as its label. Segan and Gusta released two singles that year: Sound Barrier and its D&B Mix. Segan also teamed up with hayve on See U Bounce, a single on Monstercat. A further collaboration, Shadow, brought Segan together with NGHTMRE, Crooked Bangs and hayve; it was released as a single in 2025 through BMG Rights Management (US) LLC.
