Norwich-born Jack Stevens performs as Sully, producing and DJing across jungle and electronic music. Before the UK garage revival and the later rise of future garage, Stevens was developing a sound that brought together 2-step swing, dubstep’s edge, breakstep drums and jungle. Parties in Norwich were central to his connection with jungle: Stevens and housemate Joe Shakespeare hosted a downstairs dubstep room while a jungle crew played upstairs. Free-party soundsystems in the English home counties also shaped his approach to soundsystem music.
Stevens produces with Renoise, using the tracker’s vertical grid to sequence in detail. Early releases include the EPs Phonebox and Jackman’s Rec.; his records have appeared on Keysound Recordings, Astrophonica, Foxy Jangle and Rupture LDN. He launched Uncertain Hour as a label for his jungle records. Collaborations include jungle artists Tim Reaper, Coco Bryce and Dwarde, as well as garage producer El-B; tracks with El-B began in a basic setup using an iMac’s built-in speakers.
