Ruffneck Ting was founded in Bristol in 1993 by DJ Dazee and Markee Ledge, with the record label established in 1995. Its music spans jungle and ragga jungle, and its drum and bass centres on darker, more aggressive sounds; jungle rhythms ran through its early releases. Early records, built on jungle rhythms, featured Decoder and Felony alongside the two founders, who also recorded together as Substance. Before distribution was arranged, the first tracks were played on dubplates in Bristol.
Releases included Home Boyz, LF Ant, Rude Girls and Damn Right. The label also spawned Breakbeat Culture, a sister label and shop whose releases included music by Tech Itch. After a break during the 2000s, Ruffneck Ting returned in October 2013 with RNT20, a compilation of tracks from its 1990s output. The relaunch also brought a classics album, followed by an EP with Dazee and newer Birmingham-based artists. Substance’s Spectrum combined older label tracks with four new ones, and Ruffneck Ting issued the Xtraordinary League Of Junglists album series.
