World Headquarters

World Headquarters is an independent, Black-owned nightclub and live music venue in Newcastle, United Kingdom. Its roots lie in the city’s multiracial club culture around Trent House Soul Bar, with Tom Caulker promoting club events from 1984 before opening the venue in 1993. The club offered an alternative to mainstream nightlife and a safer setting for people of colour. Caulker began it with a do-it-yourself approach, and its development drew on underground parties from the mid-1980s.

After the original site was demolished for a bus station, World Headquarters relocated in 2003 to Curtis Mayfield House on Carliol Square. The building has rooms on two floors, decorated with murals and artwork; during its conversion, the owners gave priority to sound equipment. The upstairs space was arranged around a central DJ booth, while the lower room became a soundproofed club with a separate booth. The club also made its venue available to other promoters, hosting nights such as Curves, Moonbase and Triky Disco. Its activities include club events, live performances, fashion shows and gatherings for people with learning disabilities.

Music programming has covered house, funk, jungle, drum and bass and grime, with performers including Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Akala and Ms Dynamite. In 2017, World Headquarters started WHQ & Nat Turner Live Events to promote live shows at large venues around the UK. Newcastle University awarded Caulker an honorary doctorate that year, recognising his and the club’s contribution to diversifying nightlife in the city.
