World Headquarters is an independent, Black-owned, multiracial nightclub and live music venue in Newcastle, established in 1993. It grew out of the city’s underground party scene and musical activity at the Trent House in the 1980s. The club began on Marlborough Crescent, with one floor and space for 180 people; capacity increased to 280 after the Muhammad Ali Cafe opened below it in 1997.
In 2003, the venue moved to Curtis Mayfield House at Carliol Square, East Pilgrim Street, occupying its ground and first floors. The six-storey arts venue had been a derelict warehouse called India House, built on the site of Newcastle City Gaol, which dated to 1823. Sound was a design priority, and the downstairs room now has soundproofing, a movable DJ booth, flexible staging and a bespoke Void system installed in 2016. The club’s own team and outside promoters, including Ape Team and Big Fat Rave, have staged events there; artists who have played include Aries, Kelvin 373, DJ BootyShake and NEENZY (UK).
