London-born and from Ealing in west London, Alex Reece began DJing in the late 1980s before moving into studio work. In 1992 he became a trainee engineer for producer Jack Smooth, also known as Ron Wells, and worked on early Basement Records releases. Reece also helped or engineered recordings for DJ Phantasy, Mayhem, Top Buzz and Alex Hazzard. By late 1993, he was writing and producing with Jack Smooth and had established the Acid Lab studio with his brother Oscar. He released music on Basement Records and Creative Wax before becoming part of the Metalheadz collective.
Metalheadz issued Reece’s single Basic Principles in 1994 and Pulp Fiction in 1995, releases that helped establish his reputation in the 1990s jungle scene. He signed to Island Records in 1995, after releasing music on Metalheadz, Creative Wax and Basement. In 1996, 4th & Broadway released his album So Far. Before that album, Reece had put out the singles Feel the Sunshine and Candles; the single Acid Lab also followed in 1996. His work is associated with both Island Records and Metalheadz.
Reece has recorded under several other names, including The Original Playboy, Jazz Juice and Lunar Funk, and has also used the aliases Fallen Angels and DJ Kid Twist. He recorded as Jazz Juice with Paul Saunders. Reece met and worked with Wax Doctor and DJ Pulse, then collaborated with Wax Doctor on Fallen Angels projects. His work with Wax Doctor and Utah Jazz continued until early 2003, after which he returned to working with Creative Wax Records. Following the success of So Far, he was given the opportunity to establish his own label, Als’ Records.
Reece’s later releases include the 2024 single Pulp Fiction (Lynx Edit), credited to Alex Reece with Lynx. In 2025, he released the single 30 Years of Metalheadz VIP - Pt. 2 with Goldie on Metalheadz.
