Aphrodite

Born in Aberystwyth, Wales, Gavin King moved to London with his family as a toddler and was raised in Eltham. He performs as Aphrodite, a name taken from a house night he co-promoted while studying at Warwick University. King is a DJ and producer associated with jungle and drum and bass, and is also known as A-Zone. His music has appeared under the names Alladin, Amazon II, A Zone and DJ Aphro, as well as Aphrodite. He is based in London.

King’s first release was the EP Cellar 4. He joined producer Micky Finn in the breakbeat-hardcore duo Urban Shakedown, whose track “Some Justice” reached the UK top 40 in 1992. King and Finn also worked together through the Urban Takeover label, which King co-founded with Finn, also known as Michael Hearn. Aphrodite became known for jump-up jungle and drum-and-bass productions, and released much of his music through his own Aphrodite Recordings label.

The album Aphrodite came out in 1999 on V2 Recordings, followed by Aftershock on the same label in 2002. King also made remixes for Nine Inch Nails and Dub War. His work as Urban Shakedown and his solo productions brought together his roles as a producer and DJ, while Aphrodite Recordings and Urban Takeover gave him label work alongside his own releases.

Later singles include “Let It Roll” in 2017 and “Psychodynamik 05” in 2018. In 2023, King released the single “Song for the Silver Surfer Aphrodite Remix” with PolSky on Disruptive Element Music. His 2024 singles included “Style From The Darkside (Trippcore Remix)” with Trippcore on Aphrodite Recordings and “Smile” on HK.G Music. In September 2026, Aphrodite played at TivoliVredenburg and Wyspowa Dolina / Stróża k/Dobrej.
