Ahead of Saturday’s party in Nizhny Novgorod, MIB Crew interviewed one of the headliners, Encode. Thank you, Viktor, for the interesting answers!
How did your journey into the world of drum and bass begin?
My introduction to dnb began with the radio show “Storm”, hosted by DJ Groove & DJ Dan on DFM. The first episode I heard thrilled me and inspired me to make the same kind of music. Every episode was a gift I waited for impatiently, and I still have warm memories of it. Thanks to them for that.
Who were your first inspirations?
If we’re talking about musicians and bands, it was The Prodigy, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Pendulum and Aphrodite — those are probably the key figures who influenced me strongly at the time.
How would you describe your musical style?
I simply make what I like, and if you like it too, welcome to my world.
Where have you most enjoyed performing, and where would you like to perform in the future?
I like playing where both the organisers and the crowd give you a warm welcome. Of course, I like playing at the Neuropunk festivals in Moscow, which attract a lot of people, but I also enjoy small parties, for example in Nizhny Novgorod, where I feel especially cosy and comfortable. I’d like to play in the Czech Republic: I’ve heard dnb is on the rise there right now, and it would be interesting to get a feel for the crowd. In general, I’m up for anything :)
Which artists inspire you at the moment?
Ivy Lab, their label 20/20 LDN, the Night Bass label, the regular episodes of Noisia Radio — I like what these guys are pushing — plus Wiley, Bonobo, Mr. Frenkie and many others. I’m also inspired by all kinds of events, films, games and so on.
What are your future plans? (releases, collaborations)
Preparations for something new are in full swing. I can’t wait for it to happen so I can see the crowd’s reaction. Not long to go now ;)
What do you like most about the current community, and what do you think could be improved?
There is nothing in particular that I love or hate about this community; I just like being part of it and watching how everything develops. Only music can improve this community :)
What should the audience expect from you this time?
This time, I’ll treat the crowd to some music :D
