Calyx & TeeBee are a British-Norwegian drum-and-bass duo comprising South London producer Larry Cons and Norwegian producer Torgeir Byrknes. They met as label-mates at Moving Shadow in 1998 and became friends before beginning to make music together. Calyx learned piano, guitar, saxophone, bass and drums when young, and played jazz guitar before turning to drum and bass. TeeBee founded Subtitles in 1999 as a home for his own productions, later growing it into a multi-artist label. Their first collaborations appeared in 2004, and “The Quest” was released on Subtitles in 2006. Before working with TeeBee, Calyx was a duo of Larry Cons and Chris Rush, who met at Oxford Brookes University. Rush left in 2000, after which Cons continued Calyx as a solo project.
While making their first joint album, Anatomy, Calyx & TeeBee decided to become a permanent production duo. The album came out on their own Momentum Music label in 2007. In 2012, they signed to RAM Records and released All or Nothing, their second album. Its singles included “Elevate This Sound” and “Pure Gold”; the duo also put out “Scavenger / Stepping Stones” on RAM that year.
In 2014, Calyx & TeeBee released Fabriclive 76, a mix intended to bring together drum and bass from different eras and styles, rather than focus solely on their own tracks. Their next album, 1x1, followed in 2016. In 2021, they worked with Break on “Keepin It Raw (Calyx & Teebee Remix),” released on Symmetry Recordings. Renegade Hardware is also among the labels connected with the duo.
The duo released Plates on RAM Records in 2022, along with the singles “Anything for Attention” and “Warehouse Days.” Their releases have appeared on Subtitles, Momentum Music, RAM Records and Symmetry Recordings.
