Joakuim is the drum-and-bass name of French producer Joaquim Plossu, who has lived in Marseille and spent time in London and Mexico City. Plossu began in free-party and soundsystem culture, concentrating on tekno before moving into drum and bass. He has been producing music for about 20 years, and his work under Joakuim also reaches into trip hop, dub techno and ambient. The years in London and Mexico City shaped his approach to making music, alongside his experience of Marseille.
Joakuim’s drum-and-bass productions draw on broken UK rhythms and broken-beat sounds, with dub and jazz atmospheres among their stated influences. Plossu runs the independent labels Sable Noir and Open Mind, releasing music through both. His releases have also appeared on Fokuz Recordings, COD3 QR, Celsius Recordings, Intrigue Music, Repertoire, Spearhead Records and Soul Deep Recordings.
His collaborations include work with Mukiyare, Roygreen and Protone, and Duskee. With Mukiyare, Joakuim released the single That 90's Vibe on In-Reach Records in 2022. A separate collaboration with Roygreen & Protone and Anthony Kasper produced the EP Jazz Collaborations EP for Fokuz Recordings. With Duskee, Joakuim made 8AM Roller. His releases on Intrigue Music include work with Ben Soundscape, while the 2013 single Percebaba EP paired him with Command Strange on Fokuz Recordings. Also in 2013, he was credited with Scott Allen on We Nah Run / Toonz Ragga. In 2016, his collaborations included the single All My Love EP with Impish and The Diplomat / Lost with Ben Soundscape. Joakuim’s 2021 album FLOW LP was his second album.
In 2025, Joakuim collaborated with Salem Focus on the album Natural Rythm.
