Luude is the professional name of Christian Benson. He is an Australian producer and DJ working across drum and bass and jungle-adjacent styles, with credits that include liquid funk and rollers as well as bass-driven crossovers into bass house, dubstep and garage. He was born in Tasmania and is currently based in Perth.
Background: Benson began releasing music in 2015. He is one half of the electronic duo Choomba, a project distinct from his Luude output. The detail that Luude started releasing in 2015 and that he operates both as a solo producer/DJ and as part of Choomba frames his trajectory from local Australian electronic scenes to wider international attention.
Musical style — tempo and structure: Luude’s best-known work converts recognisable melodic material into drum-and-bass frameworks. His 2021 drum-and-bass remix of Men at Work’s "Down Under" (credited as Luude featuring Colin Hay) pairs Colin Hay’s vocal performance with a faster drum-and-bass tempo and reworked low-end. Across his output he favours the DnB tempo range and the breakbeat-driven pulse that defines the genre.
Musical style — sound design and arrangement: On the evidence of his public releases, Luude’s production places emphasis on tight drum edits, clear midrange for vocals and melodic hooks, and prominent low-frequency basslines that support pop or tropical-leaning melodies. His work often restructures an original song’s chordal and vocal content to sit over quicker break patterns, making the vocal the anchor while the drums and bass supply the forward motion — a technique that is central to his remix of "Down Under."
Musical style — subgenres and crossovers: Luude’s catalogue and listed genres show active crossover between drum and bass (including liquid-leaning treatments), bassline and bass house, with occasional touches drawn from dubstep, UK garage and dancehall textures. That range explains why his drum-and-bass releases can sound simultaneously melodic and club-focused: melodic hooks or singalong vocals are presented within punchy break edits and heavy low-end.
Career and contributions: Luude’s most publicly notable contribution is the 2021 drum-and-bass remix of Men at Work’s "Down Under," released as Luude featuring Colin Hay. That remix achieved international chart success and received ARIA recognition. Earlier in his career he began releasing music in 2015 and developed parallel activity as one half of Choomba, which represents his collaborative, club-oriented output alongside his solo Luude releases. He operates in both producer and DJ roles.
Specific influences and connections: The clearest documented connection is Luude’s work with Colin Hay on the "Down Under" remix, which directly links his output to Men at Work’s original material. Beyond that collaboration, public biographical detail about additional named influences is limited; genre listings and the remix itself indicate influences across drum and bass, liquid, bass music and pop songwriting conventions.
