Mystic State

Introduction: Mystic State is a UK-based electronic music act from Bristol, often described as a duo. They work across drum & bass, drumstep, dub, dubstep and liquid funk. Mystic State operates as producers and DJs and has released EPs and albums on labels including The Chikara Project, Flexout Audio and Artikal Music UK.

Background: The project began on the turntables in their early teenage years before moving into studio production. That DJ-to-producer arc informs both their records and their live sets: a crate-trained approach to track selection and a studio practice built from learning how tracks sit on a system. Public descriptions and press list Mystic State as a duo and note steady output on the three labels named above.

Musical style — production: Mystic State’s productions are commonly described as emotive and draw directly from dub, 1990s jungle, ambient music and film scores. In practice that shows up as extended delay and reverb treatments borrowed from dub, layered ambient pads and cinematic textures influenced by film-score approaches, and rhythmic programming that references jungle’s chopped and syncopated breaks. Their work moves between liquid funk’s melodic chord work and sub-centred bass design, and heavier drumstep/dubstep tempos where low-end weight and space are pushed forward.

Musical style — DJing and mixes: As DJs they translate those production sensibilities into mixes and sets. Their DJ approach emphasises smooth harmonic transitions and bass-weighted blends: tracks are mixed to preserve low-frequency clarity and maintain atmosphere. Sets cover the spectrum from rolling liquid selections to halftime drumstep and dubstep moments, using tempo changes and EQ sculpting to keep sub and mids balanced across the transitions.

Career and contributions: Mystic State has released EPs and full-length material on The Chikara Project, Flexout Audio and Artikal Music UK. They moved from early turntable work into production and have supported their records with DJ appearances and guest mixes. Notably, they have provided guest mixes and broadcast DJ slots for outlets such as Drum&BassArena, bringing their studio sound into wider listening contexts.

Specific influences: The project explicitly cites dub, 1990s jungle, ambient music and film scores as core influences on composition and sound design; those touchpoints explain the prominent use of delay/reverb, cinematic pads and break-driven rhythmic structures in their output.
