We present a translated interview with State of Mind, originally given to the respected publication Knowledge Magazine.
State of Mind have been a successful project over the past few years, releasing material on well-known labels. They have now entered a new period in their creative work; not long ago, they released a single from their forthcoming new album. We met with the members of the project to discuss all the questions we were interested in.
Hi, guys! Tell us about your new single, Mr Cover Up.
Mr Cover Up is the first single from our new album Eat the Rich, recorded together with the talented New Zealand rapper Percieve. One day, I thought, why not make a track with him? I was curious to see how his voice would sound in drum and bass. This is what came out of it.
Yes. The EP consists of four tracks. It also includes our collaboration with Black Sun Empire, “Unconscious,” which can currently be downloaded for free, our track “Bigger Faster Stronger,” and a Neonlight remix of Mr Cover Up.
And, if I understand correctly, are other singles being prepared for release?
Of course. But I’m not going to say anything right now—it’s classified information.
Do you think the style of your music has changed in the new tracks?
The album turned out heavier than the previous one. Someone told me that its energy and drive remind them of our first album, Take Control. And that’s wonderful. We wouldn’t want to end up like, for example, the Red Hot Chili Peppers in drum and bass, gradually becoming worse and more pop-oriented.
And we’re approaching the album’s release in March. You have big plans for 2014. Can you tell us something about the new album?
As I already said, the album will be called “Eat the Rich.” It will contain 15 tracks—a full-length release. Overall, it turned out aggressive, although there are a couple of lighter tracks. All the tracks are in the drum and bass style. No dubstep, no EDM. There will also be a couple of videos, and one of them is really cool. The artwork is strange too, but that’s a major part of the concept. It’s a hand-drawn sketch by an Australian school student. He often draws sketches like this…
How was it working with Blackout?
Great. We’re very close friends. Micha told me the last time we saw each other that he likes working with us because we’re both part of the drum and bass culture—we basically grew up in it. In fact, we made 10 tracks together, which is enough for a separate album. We understand each other well, and that’s a huge advantage.
And finally, what are you looking forward to in your personal and professional life in 2014?
I don’t even know. I like taking everything as it comes. We New Zealanders are a little immature. I really want to go on a big tour of Europe and America this year. I really enjoy being on the road.
