Tom Withers, the London-based producer and DJ known as Klute, came to electronic music after playing drums, singing and writing songs in the punk band The Stupids. Withers has described becoming interested in rave culture while working at Tower Records in the Washington, D.C., area in 1991. By the early 1990s, Withers was focusing on electronic music, and Klute’s first records appeared on Certificate 18. In 1995, the single F.P.O.P. & Survival came out on the label. Withers also released two 12-inch records as Override in 1995–96; Dr. Know, Forensic and The Spectre are among the other names used for recordings.
Klute’s first album, Casual Bodies, followed on Certificate 18 in 1998. Withers founded Commercial Suicide in 2001 and runs the drum-and-bass label. The album Lie, Cheat & Steal appeared on Commercial Suicide in 2003, followed by No One’s Listening Anymore in 2005 and The Emperor's New Clothes in 2007. Klute has also released music through Hospital Records, 31 Records, Soul:R, Metalheadz and Breakbeat Science Recordings. Those label connections span releases on Withers’ own imprint and work for other drum-and-bass labels.
Klute has made several tracks with Dom and Roland, and Withers has spoken of the possibility of working with Dom and Roland again. The album Override Singles arrived on Commercial Suicide in 2023. Klute’s releases also include the singles “The Beyond” on Drum&BassArena in 2014, “Savage Circle” on Metalheadz in 2015 and “Sick Of It All” on Function Records in 2019. In 2023, Klute also remixed “Antiserum” for FATE Recordings.
Klute played at The Pickle Factory in 2024 and at The Glove That Fits in 2025. Other 2025 appearances included Moods, Luna Beach Club Bali and Planet Wax. On 8 May 2026, Klute played at Subdeck for Drumatique’s 30th anniversary.
