The fifth event in the series Cybernetic Event, consistently dedicated to broken beats, will take place on October 19 at the club Cinema. This time, the event’s main attraction will be a set by the Hungarian musician well known in drum and bass circles, Chris.SU. Ahead of the event, we prepared a short interview with Chris.SU, in which we touched on fundamental things in the musician’s creative work and life. Enjoy!
When did you start making music?
Chris.SU: My musical career began early. When I was seven, I went to a local music school to study the basics of music theory. I started playing the cello. Later, I played keyboards and bass guitar in a band. I was also a singer, and when I turned 14, I started creating music on my computer.
What attracts you most to drum and bass music?
Chris.SU: Its versatility and the fact that it is influenced by so many other genres. I like really heavy drums and beautiful basslines.
Which artists shaped your musical taste?
Chris.SU: Depeche Mode, Björk, The Prodigy, Konflict, Ed Rush & Optical.
Which artists from this genre in Ukraine have you heard?
Chris.SU: Sunchase, NickBee, half of Teddy Killerz (laughs). Seriously, there are genuinely talented guys in Ukraine.
What other genres of music do you like?
Chris.SU: I like listening to soundtracks (for example, Cliff Martinez or Mark Isham), sometimes house or a little techno (I like Trentemøller’s early work), or even classical music.
How did your career begin? Tell us everything from the very start.
Chris.SU: It’s difficult to say in one sentence, but I was actively performing on stage from 1999, and from 2002 I began DJing regularly. I think I was genuinely lucky to become part of all this.
What inspires you most when you write tracks?
Chris.SU: My mood is always inspired by everyday life, a good film, or goals that I have set for myself for the next several months. At the same time, a good vocalist can simply inspire me.
You are currently working on creating your own label. Could you tell us a little about it?
Chris.SU: FATE Recordings will begin operating on October 21 with “Together in the Night” ft. Mira and “The Burning” with State of Mind. Opening my own label is a dream brought to life, which involves a lot of work. But I’m actually glad to have the opportunity to decide for myself what to release and to be responsible for the product I release.
Tell us a little about your family.
Chris.SU: My daughter has just turned 15 months old, and I have been married since 2010. Without my family, I wouldn’t be where I am now. They always support me, in both good times and bad.
Is it difficult to combine family and a career in music?
Chris.SU: It’s difficult when I’m away on weekends, but I’m with my family throughout the whole week. We’re trying to cope with it, but with a little girl, it isn’t always easy.
This isn’t your first visit to Ukraine. What are your expectations this time for the upcoming Cybernetic Event 5 party?
Chris.SU: The Ukrainian audience is very musically knowledgeable. They know both old and new tracks. The last time I played in Kyiv was several years ago. If I remember correctly, it was an open-air event under the Bridge. I hope the audience will enjoy dark tech dnb.
What are your wishes for the Ukrainian audience?
Chris.SU: I wish all my Ukrainian friends strength during these difficult times and the ability to take care of themselves. And also, be sure to learn how to pronounce “egészségedre” (a Hungarian expression meaning “let’s drink”) when we drink vodka together (laughs).
As a reminder, Chris’s performance can be heard this coming Saturday, 19 October at the party Cybernetic Event 5, where, naturally, most of the lineup will consist of Ukrainian representatives of broken beats: Teddy Killerz, Rolar & MCReMov, NickBee, Stereotype, Naum, Jabro Grow and Puffa.
