Black Sun Empire is a Dutch drum and bass label run by the Utrecht trio of the same name, Michiel Eikenaar, Milan Heyboer and Rene Verdult, who formed the group in 1997 and set up Black Sun Empire Recordings in 2002. Neurofunk sits at the centre of its output, which covers the group’s own music and collaborations with artists including Noisia, Neonlight and State of Mind.
The imprint’s releases include the 2002 single The Rat / B'Negative and the group’s debut album, Driving Insane, issued in 2004. Later albums were Cruel and Unusual in 2005, Endangered Species in 2007 and From the Shadows in 2012. Obsessions was created as a sub-label in 2005, and Shadows of the Empire began in 2009 as a dubstep label.
In 2013 the trio established Blackout Music NL to shift attention toward other artists, and their album The Wrong Room came out there in 2017. The label has also hosted events and festival stages.
