Take the pressure of industrial hardcore, bolt it to the weight of drum & bass, and let the stack sort out the rest. That is crossbreed: industrial hardcore and drum & bass fused, often with influences from metal and breakcore, and placed as emerging in the mid-2000s. The name is closely tied to the Dutch duo The Outside Agency, made up of DJ Hidden and Eye-D, and to the Rotterdam label PRSPCT Recordings.
Amen breaks, dark vibes, a port city
PRSPCT founder Gareth de Wijk (DJ Thrasher) described the label's early crossbreed in 2016 as amen breaks with a dark vibe. Under his direction a new subgenre emerged that welded gabber and hardcore elements onto darkstep, the dark, hard side of drum & bass. De Wijk tied the gritty low end to Rotterdam itself: an industrial working city and Europe's biggest port. He also remarked that once the "real" crossbreed rhythm arrived, it quickly became boring.
Who named the beast
Hardcore producers switch lanes
The demo of The Outside Agency was signed by Mokum Records, and the duo turned to drum & bass as hardcore went through many changes from 1998 onward. Eye-D has used that alias only for drum & bass material since 2001, while the duo's hardcore work appears under The Outside Agency name. Eye-D is based in Goes in the Netherlands.
From hardcore drum & bass to crossbreed
The duo had long worked drum & bass influences into their hardcore sets and productions, and later releases on Genosha Recordings became full hybrids of the two styles. They gave the new style the name "crossbreed" and started the sister label Genosha One Seven Five specifically to release it, billed as the first label of its kind. De Wijk said that "hardcore drum & bass" was a mouthful and that people soon began saying "crossbreed"; he adds that DJ Hidden later gave it that name. Either way, the tag stuck.
PRSPCT and the Rotterdam connection
PRSPCT Recordings, founded by de Wijk, was an early home for the sound. He recalled that the label's first release featured Resonators by DJ Hidden and Pain by Limewax, and that in 2005 the label already had an amen-break tune with a dark feel. Eye-D and DJ Hidden later put out the album Peer to Peer Pressure (2011) and Eye-D released Mission Statement (2013) on the label. By 2016 PRSPCT had around 120 releases, all on wax, and five sublabels, including a "mainroom" label for drum & bass, XTRM for hardcore and RVLT for breakcore.
The Definition Series
Genosha One Seven Five's Crossbreed Definition Series began in 2010 with parts one to three, and the label also put out a compilation, Now This Is Crossbreed Vol. 10, in 2014. Contributors to the series include Cooh, SPL, Counterstrike, Donny, Current Value and Switch Technique. Parts four and five landed in 2023 and 2025, and part five (catalogue number One Seven Five #019) is credited to The Outside Agency and Supire & Koarse.
The selectors and producers carrying it
- The Outside Agency / DJ Hidden / Eye-D: the Dutch duo credited with naming the style. Collaborations include Sei2ure, Forbidden Society, Peter Kurten and Katharsys, and Eye-D has also worked with Black Sun Empire and Evol Intent.
- Limewax: a PRSPCT artist whose new LP, according to de Wijk in 2016, was set to return to the darkstep drum & bass sound of 2005. At a PRSPCT night in Tilburg in 2023 he played harder drum & bass and some crossbreed.
- Other notable names in the style: Gancher & Ruin, Cooh, Counterstrike, Katharsys, Sinister Souls, Switch Technique and Lucy Furr. Counterstrike are a drum and bass producer duo from Cape Town, South Africa, with a sound inspired by metal, techno and early techstep.
- Triamer & Nagato and Katharsys appear on the roster of Yellow Stripe Recordings.
Labels pushing the weight
- Genosha Recordings (Goes, Netherlands): the duo's main label, talked of as one of the most successful, influential and respected experimental industrial hardcore labels, alongside its crossbreed sister label Genosha One Seven Five.
- PRSPCT Recordings (Rotterdam): founded by DJ Thrasher, and by 2023 more than 21 years old.
- Yellow Stripe Recordings (Porto, Portugal): the label arm of the Yellow Stripe promoter and crew, releasing what it calls hard and dark drum & bass, hardcore and experimental music. It is listed, with PRSPCT and Future Sickness Records, among the early pioneers of crossbreed.
- Karnage Records (Toulouse, France): founded in 1998 by DJ Thanos and described as coming out of the free party movement of the 1990s. It drops several vinyls and digital EPs every year.
Maassilo, twice a year
PRSPCT's flagship PRSPCT XL sessions are held at the Maassilo in Rotterdam. De Wijk said in 2016 that he organised one twice a year, and the 32nd edition was scheduled for early December 2023. Yellow Stripe is both a label and a promoter and crew in Porto, and Eye-D and DJ Hidden are frequent guests at PRSPCT and Smackdown nights in the Netherlands.
Still rolling in 2025
Crossbreed is now widely accepted as a genre, and the Definition Series was still running in 2025. De Wijk also mentioned that a PRSPCT release had once been played on Dutch national radio (3FM).
Next door: darkstep and techstep
Crossbreed sits closest to darkstep, which de Wijk named as the drum & bass half of the combination. It also shares ground with techstep, an influence on Counterstrike.
