Yellow Stripe Recordings launched in Porto in January 2011 as an extension of the Yellow-Stripe promoter and crew, which had been active in the city since 2005. T-Rex founded the label and manages it, after members of the collective chose to set up their own record label. A launch party took place at Porto Rio, and the first vinyl release followed in February. Music is issued on vinyl, CD and digitally.
Its output spans hard and dark drum and bass, hardcore, experimental music and crossbreed, and the label also releases neurofunk and skullstep. It calls its Porto-rooted sound “Portostep”: hard, direct drum and bass with a steppers groove. The label was set up to carry the crew’s sound to an international audience, and members such as C-Netik and BSA have released music on it.
Among its releases are “Crowd Surfer, Hammer”, a 2011 single by C-Netik and Gancher & Ruin, and Peter Kurten’s “Acid Pecker / Closer”, issued in 2022. Triamer & Nagato’s Bastards EP appeared in 2017, followed by BSA’s The Extra Mile EP in 2018. In 2021 the label released “Fly / Rapture” by Freqax and Katharsys, and Crawler’s “The Calling” followed in 2023. Its other releases include BSA’s Let It Be EP, Katharsys’s Daybreaker EP and C-Netik’s Surplus MK I EP.
