Dim Mak Records was established by Steve Aoki in 1996 in his college apartment at the University of California, Santa Barbara, beginning with a seven-inch release by hardcore punk band Stickfigurecarousel. Its releases span punk, indie rock, hardcore and hip-hop as well as electronic music, including drum and bass. The Kills’ first record appeared on the label in 2001, and Dim Mak later moved to Los Angeles.
Dim Mak added Bloc Party to its roster in 2003 and issued the band’s first US single that year. The label launched New Noise, an imprint for music discovery, in 2010, and released Dirtyphonics’ The Tarantino EP in 2011. Its releases also include music by Bella Renee, Holly, Mila Falls and Nu-La, and it runs Dim Mak En Fuego, a sub-label focused on underground Latin music and emerging artists.
