DJ Hype and Pascal set up Playaz Recordings in the late 1990s, and it became known for jump-up and dancefloor drum and bass. DJ Hazard, Sub Zero, Original Sin and Taxman were among its central artists, and Potential Badboy, Jaydan, Crystal Clear and Prolix also released music through it. Its releases included “True Playaz Anthem” and “Peace, Love & Unity”.
The label grew out of True Playaz, the drum and bass collective that DJ Hype, Pascal and DJ Zinc formed in 1996; after Zinc left, Hype and Pascal carried on under the Playaz name. Based in London, the label ran Ganja and Liq-Weed as sub-labels. Its Playaz club nights started at The End in London before moving to Fabric, where the label also held residencies.
