Producer, DJ
The duo known as Phace traces its roots to the origins of the drum and bass movement in Germany. Having come together at the end of the millennium to create music, an excellent outlet was created for Florian and Nicolas to express their exciting and mind-blowing music. Aiming to create new combinations of sounds, they attempted to combine cold mathematical structures, a small amount of disorder, and aggressive sounds. When you combine all these elements and then serve them with warm distortion, you get a worthy example of a new style in music. Much of these musicians' work has its origins in the late-1990s drum and bass movement. Nevertheless, when assessing their tracks, you may notice that they draw inspiration from every form of art. They successfully uncovered a unique sound characterized by a combination of styles such as edge funk and elements of tech. This is how they burst onto the global stage, focused on their mission: expanding the boundaries of progressive music. According to Phace, the creators of the “disturbing funk” style, this music is very difficult to explain in words.
In 2004, Phace signed a contract with the head of Subtitles Recordings — Teebee, who immediately began promoting them toward the heights of the music scene. Teebee believed that their music and his full support would make them put one hundred percent effort into writing music. Their first release on Subtitles — Brainwave / Polymers received heavy rotation on dancefloors with support from names such as Ed Rush, Optical, Matrix, Teebee, Calyx, and Noisia. Following the success of this release, Phace realized that the time had come to continue composing their new sound. Further collaboration with Subtitles resulted in new releases in 2005: Now & Tomorrow and another insane piece of funk, Hot Rock / Moore’s Law. Outside Subtitles, they also released Dead Air (in collaboration with Noisia), recorded for Renegade Hardware. Another track recorded for Renegade Hardware, “Lost”, was included on the album Carpe Diem LP in 2006. Apart from famous record companies, Phace were also not above releasing their tracks on such record labels as Citrus, Full Force and Syndrome Recordings. The success of all these releases and of the contract signed with the giant Virus Recordings, on which Phace, with the participation of Noisia, recorded the track Unveil — all of this brought Florian and Nicolas to the forefront of the electronic scene. At home, in 2005, they received further recognition at the prestigious German ceremony Future Music DnB Awards by winning the categories “Best National Producers” and “Second-Best National DJ.”
In 2005, in the first issue of Knowledge Magazine, the press described their explosive start; they also appeared in the pages of Germany's leading drum and bass magazine, Resident. Articles about the popularity of Phace were published in Austria and Switzerland. Global drum and bass forums are full of flattering and kind comments about these DJs. Promoters from around the world are lining up for them. Phace are frequent guests at major parties around the world: Renegade Hardware party at the legendary London club The End, Kings of the Jungle party series in Mannheim, and, of course, parties across their native Germany. The guys also love setting dancefloors alight around the world: Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Belgium, Serbia, France, Italy, and many other countries. This year they completed a tour of North America. In October 2006, their Australian tour was successfully completed. Despite their busy performance schedule, Phace announced the release of their debut album Psycho on Subtitles in February 2007. Judging by how eagerly the world is awaiting this release and by the abundance of announced appearances in 2007, perhaps Phace will become one of the year's principal players. The PR department is already making announcements to Knowledge, ATM, Mixmag and others at full speed. Florian and Nicolas were the first drum and bass DJs to be invited onto Mary Anne Hobbs's Breezeblock show on BBC Radio 1. Also in 2006, the guys received the happy news that they had once again been nominated for “Best National Producers” and “Second-Best National DJ” at the Future Music DnB Awards.
