In the early 2000s, Crystal Clear emerged from DJ Hype’s Playaz camp as the drum & bass alias of producer Andy Haeffele. The early track “Itzalot”, featuring Stapleton, gained support from BBC Radio 1 presenter Annie Mac. Its follow-up, “Levels”, became Mistajam’s Jam Hot Record and led to Major Look, a pop and drum & bass project backed by Universal. Crystal Clear also toured internationally as a DJ.
Haeffele later made house and techno as Melody’s Enemy. After a 13-year absence from the genre, he returned in 2022 with “Divide & Conquer”, included on Sofa Sound Bristol Sofa King Sick IV. His work also includes the Full Circle EP, which features “Puppet Man”, made with Codebreaker. Mary Anne Hobbs chose that track as her “Near Future” selection on BBC 6Music.
In 2024, Crystal Clear released “Richness Is Life” with Sweetpea on Sofa Sound and “I Want To Know” with Creatures on Rebel Music. His releases also include the Madhouse EP, and his music has appeared on Sauce Recordings and Love For Low Frequencies. He has collaborated with Riya on “Overlook”, released on V Recordings.
Crystal Clear and Codebreaker also made a Sofa Sound Mixing Bowl mix to accompany the EP. The two-track “Business / Backin” with Creatures was released for Transparent Audio. His releases have appeared on labels including RUN, Flexout Audio and The Sauce, as well as V Recordings, Playaz, Sofa Sound Bristol and Thirty One Recordings. In 2025, Crystal Clear released the four-track Selector EP on V Recordings and collaborated with DJ Hazard, DJ Hype and Heist on “Return of the Dubplate Killa - Vol.1” for Playaz Recordings. His 2026 releases include the Set It Up EP for the same label, with collaborations involving L-Side, Alibi and Sweetpea, plus “Acid” with Minor Forms on Flexout Audio and “Nightmares” with Minor Forms on V Recordings.
