Scott McIlroy took up DJing before the rave scene and began collecting records as a teenager, bringing tapes of electronic music to school. He later played at clubs and raves, then played at Metalheadz nights at London’s Blue Note. Under the name Doc Scott, he works as a drum and bass DJ and producer; he also records as Nasty Habits. He was a founding member of A Bunch Of Cuts, and released music under both names on Reinforced Records, Absolute 2 and Metalheadz.
His early releases include “Here Comes The Drumz” on Reinforced, “Tokyo Dawn” on Good Looking Records and “Shadow Boxing” on 31 Records. Doc Scott co-founded Metalheadz with Goldie, and “VIP Drumz” became the label’s first release. He established 31 Records in 1996, with “Shadow Boxing” helping to establish the imprint. He was born in Coventry, England, and began playing clubs and raves around 1989–1990, including Amnesia House and The Eclipse. As Nasty Habits, he released the EP As Nasty As I Want To Be on Reinforced Records in 1992. His selected releases also include Drumz 95/Blue Skies (1995).
Doc Scott has described DJing, running a label and presenting a radio show as ways to share music. He has praised Om Unit, Machinedrum and Synkro for bringing fresh perspectives to drum and bass. In conversation with Martyn, he singled out dBridge and Instra:mental’s Autonomic Podcast as a turning point in the music’s development. He also released “Get Busy Cru/Deranged” with Keith Suckling on Reinforced Records.
From 2014 to 2018, Doc Scott hosted Future Beats on London’s Origin FM. He has described returning to 31 Records in a more positive frame of mind, with a renewed interest in supporting new music. In 2021, he released the single “Far Away / It's Yours” on Metalheadz. In 2023, he released 25 Years of Metalheadz – Part 9 on the label with Rufige Kru.
