Breakage

Born in Slough, Berkshire, James Boyle began making drum-and-bass music as a teenager and later became known as Breakage. An unofficial remix of Doc Scott’s “Here Come the Drums” brought him attention in 2001. His early releases appeared on Reinforced Records, Scientific Wax and Bassbin, including solo EPs on Reinforced and an EP made with Threshold under the name Special Branch. Boyle also worked with Dsyfa as Solar Motion. In 2005, he joined Equinox to lead Scientific Wax, adding label responsibilities to his work as a producer and DJ.

Breakage’s early work included the 2004 single “Acid Rain” with Equinox on Inperspective Records. His releases have crossed jungle, drum and bass and dubstep, with music also issued through Digital Soundboy. The debut album This Too Shall Pass arrived in 2006, followed by Foundation in 2010. “Fighting Fire”, featuring Jess Mills, was a single from the latter and became Breakage’s first UK Top 40 hit. “Run ’Em Out”, featuring Roots Manuva, is another of his collaborations. Boyle’s work on Digital Soundboy preceded the launch of his own Index club night and label.

The first Index release was the single “Elmhurst Dub” / “Anymore”. Boyle has said the label reflects his own taste and the music he wants to hear in clubs; running it also means deciding what gets released. He has described finding it difficult to stop tinkering with tracks. His album When The Night Comes followed in 2015. Breakage and Sam Binga later exchanged remixes for an EP on Critical Music, despite not having worked together in the studio before discussing the project; Breakage’s contribution was a remix of Binga’s “Mind & Spirit”.

In 2019, Breakage released the EP Liff U. His later Index releases include the EP India November Delta Echo X-Ray, which features a remix by Break. In 2023, he released the single “Style & Pattern” on Index. Breakage has also worked with regular collaborator SP:MC, who hosted his DJ Mag podcast. In 2025, he released the single “NOBU (Remixes)” with Champion, KINGH and SHY FX on Cult.ure.
