MC Fats

MC Fats, also known as Singing Fats, was Wildale Spencer, who developed his singing and toasting in UK reggae sound-system culture before moving into jungle and drum & bass. From the early 1990s, he performed as a vocalist and MC at clubs and drum & bass events. His musical influences included soul, rare groove and reggae, alongside the sound-system tradition that shaped his approach to the mic. His work included both sung parts and MC performances, and he was known for delivering positive messages. He played most often in London, with the Rhythm Factory his most-played club.

A long-running partnership with A Sides began around 1993 or 1994. Spencer said they connected through Cool Hand Flex, then made a track after recording a vocal over the phone. DJ Hype’s Peace, Love & Unity and Calibre’s Drop It Down were among his notable collaborations. Spencer praised Calibre’s musicality and called their track a major hit. His vocals also featured on work with Dillinja, Break, SPY and Alix Perez. In 2007, he appeared on Alix Perez single Down the Line for Shogun Audio.

His voice appeared on releases for Digital Soundboy, Shogun Audio, Metalheadz, Valve, Breakbeat Kaos, Movement, RAM, Tru Playaz and V Recordings. In 2014, Spencer released the album We Gotcha through his U Understand Me Music imprint, working with A Sides and other collaborators. He later joined Command Strange for the single Brand New Style and worked with Serum & Bladerunner on Inner Soul, both released through V Recordings.

Spencer worked with A Sides on the 2020 single Fours, released through SUNANDBASS Recordings. That year, he also released the single Don't Stop on Jekyll & Hyde Recordings. In November 2022, he and Break released Natural Way. Wildale Spencer died in March 2023. In 2025, We Are Junglists (Borai Remix) appeared with Ragga Twins on Nice Up!, and Natural Way (Break Remix) came out on Symmetry Recordings. In 2026, V Recordings released Vibes Start to Change, an album with Inja.
