Whiney

Coventry is where William Hine was born and raised before he became known as Whiney, a producer and DJ working in drum and bass. Piano and violin were part of his early musical training, and he also sang in choirs and played in orchestras before turning his attention to production. At 18, a performance in Manchester alongside MCs brought him closer to grime and to the live energy MCs bring to drum and bass. His music is associated with rolling breaks and atmospheric liquid drum and bass, while his album Waystone drew on grime, hip-hop and trip-hop as well.

In 2012, Whiney and Keeno made the Sweetest Sin EP for Subsphere Recordings, an early breakthrough for Hine. He later released the Stranger Tides EP through Med School. He has also put out music on Hospital Records. The Stranger Tides EP came out in 2016, and his album Talisman followed in 2017. Waystone was released in 2018, with Keeno, Sense MC, Hugh Hardie and Kwam among its collaborators. Med School was Hospital Records’ sister label, and Whiney became part of the Hospital Records family.

Whiney’s collaborations have included both producers and MCs. With Inja, Whiney made the beats for Smile & Wave, Inja’s 2021 album, producing the record single-handedly. Whiney and grime MC Subten joined forces on “Headlines”, a track that combines grime and drum and bass. Whiney and P Money also collaborated on the album Streets, Love & Other Stuff, blending grime and drum and bass. Their other collaborators include Keeno, Hugh Hardie and Inja.

In 2025, Whiney released the four-song West Connect EP on Hospital Records. That year also brought “99 Octane”, a single made with hayve and P Money and released on Monstercat. Whiney released the single “Find A Way” with Javeon on Shogun Audio in 2024. In 2023, he reworked “Running” as a remix with Maddy and T & Sugah for Liquicity Records. In 2024, he also worked with DnB Allstars and Subten on “Allstars Mic (feat. DnB Allstars)”, released on DnB Allstars.
