Med School began in 2006 as Hospital Records’ sister label, created to explore experimental drum and bass and other electronic sounds. Based in London, it sought styles beyond Hospital Records’ usual range, while its releases moved between soulful liquid drum and bass, darker minimal productions and related electronic music. The label’s sound was deeper and more experimental than Hospital Records’ output. It supported emerging drum-and-bass producers and gave established artists room to pursue experimental projects. Its first release, S.P.Y’s “Black Flag” and “Double Dragon,” came out in September 2006, and early artists included Icicle.
The label helped launch the careers of Etherwood and Keeno, and released Receptor’s single “Magnetism” in 2016. Its first artist album was Bop’s Clear Your Mind, released in 2009; it reached number 32 on the Official UK Top 40 Dance Album Chart. Med School also issued the New Blood compilation series to showcase new producers.
Med School closed in 2019. The final compilation, Med School: Graduation, was released on April 24, 2020, with 23 new tracks, including work by Bop, Keeno and Etherwood.
