Soul:R was a Manchester-based drum and bass label founded by Marcus Intalex and S.T Files in 2001, with a focus on liquid and deep drum and bass. Its releases during the 2000s and 2010s featured Calibre, DRS, LSB and the two founders. The label’s first release was M.I.S.T’s “Play On Me / Warp 1,” followed in its founding year by Calibre’s single Fire & Water. Soul:R grew from club-night residencies at Band on the Wall in Manchester and Fabric in London. Its releases also gave Calibre, Martyn and Instra:mental an early platform, and included Marcus Intalex’s album 21 in 2011. Intalex chose the name by combining “soul” with the letter R as a drum-and-bass reference. He died in 2017.
