Tru Thoughts was founded in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, and is an independent record label based in Brighton, UK. Its releases span drum and bass, jazz, soul and funk. The label began as an outlet for artists who played its Brighton club nights, among them phonic:hoop and Shake Yer Wig, and it was first run from the space beneath Luis's stairs. Those nights helped finance the label, and weekly events had ended by 2009.
Quantic joined in 2000, and his Animal Magic was the label's first artist album that year. Alice Russell, Hot 8 Brass Band and Rodney P have also put out music on Tru Thoughts. It issued Drumagick's Summer Samba Club in 2012 and runs the Shapes compilation series. Its wider activity includes Full Thought Publishing and the imprints Unfold Records and Zebra Traffic, set up for hip-hop. In 2005 Tru Thoughts was named Label of the Year at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards.
