Chase & Status formed in 2003, after Saul Milton and Will Kennard met while studying at university in Manchester. Milton performs as Chase and Kennard as Status; the London duo are associated with drum and bass, jungle and dubstep. They met through the drum-and-bass scene and bonded over DJing and buying records. Their first album, More Than Alot, arrived in 2008. Before founding MTA Records, they released music on Breakbeat Kaos and Bingo. Their 2003 single Wise Up / Tricky came out on Bingo Bass.
In 2009, Milton and Kennard founded the independent label MTA Records. Their 2011 album No More Idols features contributions from Plan B, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal and Liam Bailey, and includes the single “End Credits” with Plan B. Liam Bailey also features on the album’s single “Blind Faith.” The album was followed by Brand New Machine in 2013 and Tribe in 2017. In a 2013 interview, Chase & Status described Brand New Machine as a nod to early-1990s music and culture, including the influence of Bristol acts Massive Attack and Portishead.
The duo have collaborated with CeeLo Green, Rihanna, Example, Kano, Tinie Tempah and Stormzy. Andy Gangadeen drums with Chase & Status during live performances. They have described working with each other and guest artists as an important part of their success, and Stormzy joined them on “Backbone”, which reached number one on the UK singles chart.
In 2023, Chase & Status released “Disconnect (Tiësto Remix)” with Becky Hill and Tiësto on Polydor Records. Their 2024 single “Gunfinger (Salute)” features IRAH and was released on Atlantic Records UK. In 2026, they released “Innocent Smile” with Skepta and Suggs on Epic Records UK, followed by the album Generic Everything on Warner Records.
