Polydor Records was founded in Leipzig, Germany, in 1913 by Polyphon-Musikwerke AG. It became an export label in 1924 and a popular-music label in 1946. Deutsche Grammophon set up Polydor Records Ltd. in London as its British arm in 1954, a US branch followed in 1969, and in 1972 Polydor became part of PolyGram.
Across a roster that spans many genres, the label has signed and released drum and bass. EV, piri, Tommy Villiers, NOTION and Andy C have all had music out on Polydor, including piri & Tommy's liquid track "On & On", and Liam Bailey's "2am Rough Tracks" came out in 2010.
Universal Music UK put Tom March and Ben Mortimer in charge of the label in 2016, and Polydor won Music Week's Record Company of the Year in 2019. In 2023 it launched Chaos, a dance and electronic imprint whose first release was Jazzy's "Giving Me".
