Position Chrome is a Berlin drum and bass label whose releases go back to 1996. It is closely tied to the producer Mathis Mootz, better known as The Panacea, and its sound is dark and aggressive: heavy bass, intricate drums and industrial textures, running into darkstep, crossbreed and neurofunk.
The label grew out of Chrome, a division of Mille Plateaux and Force Inc. Music Works that first released freestyle, hip-hop and percussion-led music before turning to hardcore drum and bass. Mootz took over its A&R in 1997, the year of the various-artists CD Position Chrome, and the Panacea retrospective CD followed in 1999. Limewax, Counterstrike, Current Value, Alec Empire and Techno Animal have all released on the label.
Activity stopped in 2004 when the distributor EFA-Medien went bankrupt, and Mootz revived Position Chrome in 2005. Audio’s Sector 9 / Loudener came out in 2010 and Gancher & Ruin’s Masks Off EP in 2017.
