Moving Shadow began in 1990, founded by Rob Playford and initially run from his home in Stevenage, England. Its music policy encompassed drum and bass, jungle, hardcore and techno, and its releases included work by Foul Play, Omni Trio, 2 Bad Mice, Goldie and E-Z Rollers. In 1993, the label issued Omni Trio Step Off (Gold Blend Remix) / Feel Better (Foul Play Remix). Earth Leakage Trip’s Psychotronic EP, released in 1991, was the first to use a “Shadow” catalogue number.
Rob Playford co-wrote, engineered and recorded Goldie’s album Timeless at the label; FFRR Records released it in 1995. That year, Moving Shadow also put out albums by Omni Trio and Foul Play. In 1996, the label established Audio Couture as a sub-label for new artists, alongside Shadow Cryptic. Its special release series included Two on One, 10 and MSXEP. By 2005, Moving Shadow had put out more than 200 singles and over 45 full-length CDs. It stopped releasing new artist material in 2006 and ceased operations in 2008.
