If the musical tastes of our contemporaries could be expressed in figures, one curious finding would surely be this: every ten minutes, somewhere in the world, someone brightens their day with the sound of THEIR music… NERO, the duo of Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray, share a story of passionate love… for music!
There seems to be far too much that is unusual about their incredibly rapid rise… Yet what looks like strange coincidence in everyday life turns out to be a pattern in the lives of talented people. Daniel’s chance (or not so chance?!) meeting with DJ SS himself, who took notice of the young duo’s productions, opened many doors for the musicians. Five tracks that became hugely popular, five stages of life dividing everything into “before” and “after”. When DJ SS is your musical guru, you no longer have the right to make mistakes. All that remains is boundless room for constant forward movement… and experimentation, and when it comes to experiments, NERO definitely have no equals. In 2005 NERO released the track “Dick Tracy”. It conquered the world’s charts… In 2006 NERO presented the Requiem EP (yes, it really is about Mozart’s Requiem). The track “Autopsy” went into rotation on BBC Radio 1. And it became obvious that only true geniuses of electronic music could treat Mozart’s immortal work in such a way that a new interpretation of the classical piece would win over hearts completely foreign to it.
Today NERO keep multiplying their popularity with every new track, balancing at the crossroads of an ever-growing number of genres and styles. Their flight of sonic imagination is unlikely to be limited by any peaks at all. Still, the main peak already lies at the feet of these music-obsessed experimenters: NERO are one of the most extraordinary electronic projects in the world.
