Must Make Music was established in 2018 by Jack Stevens, who records as Workforce and was formerly one half of SpectraSoul. The label began at the same time as Stevens’s solo project, initially providing a platform for his own work and giving him control over its sound, release schedule and direction. Its approach grew from the Must Make podcast, carrying forward an emphasis on honesty and expression, as well as a preference for music that avoids formulaic approaches. Azifm was the first artist signed from outside the label. Must Make Music releases drum and bass, while also giving artists room to explore other tempos and styles.
Based in Worthing, Must Make Music is closely connected with Brighton’s underground culture. Stevens previously lived in Brighton and took part in its drum and bass community from the early 2000s. He oversees the label’s design, alongside his role in shaping its musical direction. L-Side, Monrroe, DRS and Tyler Daley have also released on it.
Must Make Music has issued compilations under the Parchment name. Contributors to those releases include Winslow, Paige Julia, Break, En:vy and Thread. Its releases also include Workforce’s album Set & Setting, released in 2022, and his eight-track album Nothing Iz Sacred. In 2020, DRS and Workforce released the single Cheap Love on Must Make Music.
